A Twitter user has suggested killing two conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices, following the leak of a draft set to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion. The user from the U.K. eventually deleted the posts after receiving much backlash.
Freelance copywriter Simon Gwynn made the veiled threats against Associate Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas in two separate tweets. He wrote in the first tweet dated May 3: “If you had the chance to kill Thomas and Alito, the two oldest right-wing Supreme Court [justices], should you do it while [President Joe] Biden can get his nominees to replace them confirmed?”
Thomas was appointed to the high court in 1991 during the term of former President George H.W. Bush. Alito, meanwhile, was appointed to the high court in 2006 by former President George W. Bush.
Gwynn – who hails from Sheffield, England – described his question as “an interesting real-life ‘trolley problem’ right now.” The copywriter referenced the thought experiment involving an onlooker being given the chance to save five people from being killed by a trolley by diverting it to kill just one person. “It’s interesting as an abstract question, but becomes a real conundrum if, say, you’re terminally ill and have little to lose yourself – but know that it could save many women’s lives in the future,” Gwynn subsequently tweeted in defense of his earlier post.
But following a strong backlash from other users, he eventually removed both tweets. Gwynn admitted his offending posts to be “pretty irresponsible,” but insisted that they did not violate Twitter’s terms of service (TOS).
“I don’t endorse murdering anyone, but [I] don’t think there’s anything wrong with thought experiments,” Gwynn wrote, adding that Twitter “is not often a good place” for these.
Many Twitter users rebuked Gwynn for his inflammatory posts, accusing him of inciting violence. They also flagged his offending tweets to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Twitter’s moderation team.
User @andy_wright_esq tweeted in response to the copywriter’s claim that Twitter is inappropriate for thought experiments: “I’d be curious where you think a good place would be to hypothesize the murder of two Supreme Court justices?”
Another user who went by the alias @Shadyhugs claimed Gwynn’s tweet was “no thought experiment. This was exactly what it appeared to be: Wishful thinking on a public forum in hopes of putting the idea in someone’s mind and that they might act on it.”
Meanwhile, Twitter user @pryboy pointed out the double standard when conservative users say the same thing against liberal Supreme Court justices. “If a conservative said the same thing about [Associate Justices Sonia] Sotomayor and [Elena] Kagan, they would be banned from Twitter for threatening speech,” they tweeted.
Townhall.com Web Editor Rebecca Downs replied to Gwynn, asking him: “How are [your tweets against Alito and Thomas] not against Twitter TOS? Why did you delete them, then, if they’re not?”
Gwynn’s tweets that suggested the killing of the two conservative justices followed the May 2 leak of a draft opinion penned by Alito. The opinion is set to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that upheld abortion if four other justices adopt it.
