In a tragic ruling, Mexico’s 12th District Court has overturned a ruling from 2013 which prevented GMO conglomerates, Monsanto and Syngenta, from planting genetically modified maize in Mexico. This new ruling followed two years of hardcore lobbying which included 93 appeals by the flailing biotech industry, after the Mexican people were successfully able to get Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J. of the Twelfth Federal District Court for Civil Matters of Mexico City to ban GMO maize under the reasoning that there was clear risk of imminent harm to the environment.

The ruling by Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J. in 2013 also barred multinationals like Monsanto and Pioneer from releasing transgenic maize in the Mexican countryside, as long as collective action lawsuits initiated by citizens, farmers, scientists and civil society organizations were working their way through the judicial system.

Fret not, for the fight is far from over, as activist leaders Miguel Concha, Victor Suarez, Dr. Mercedes Lopéz and Adelita San Vicente gather together the rebuttal under the banner of Acción Colectiva.
